Karo

Karo is a regency on the northwestern shore of Lake Toba, situated in the Barisan Mountains. Karo is famous for its agriculture of fruit and vegetables. Kabanjahe is the regency’s capital city. Other towns are Berastagi and Merek. To see it on the map, click here.
Berastagi is 2 hours by bus from Medan. Tahura National Park is a beautiful spot for exploring the jungle at Berastagi. There are a good waterfall and clear pedestrian paths. You will almost certainly see wildlife in a short walk into the forest, such as gibbons or other primates, and have a good chance of seeing a hornbill or some other exotic birds. The park also offers rides on elephants and horses.
Forty minutes from Berastagi is the town of Merek, a place famous for the Sipiso-Piso Waterfall. The waterfall is 120 meters (394 ft) high and represents an underground river which flows out into the Toba caldera.
