Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport (airport code: DTB) is an international airport on Lake Toba. Its former name was Silangit International Airport. Located in the town of Siborongborong, North-Tapanuli, the facility has a 2,650 m x 45 m (8,694 ft × 148 ft) runway. To see it on the map, click here.
What’s Special
DTB is the main entrance to the lake for international visitors. It only takes 25 minutes to get from the arrival hall to the most adjacent shoreline by car. The ride from the airport to Ajibata Port (the dock connecting the mainland with Samosir island) is only 2 hours, compared to 4 hours from Kualanamu International Airport.
Garuda Indonesia used to serve the Sisingamangaraja XII-Changi flight route using a CRJ 1000 Bombardier fleet with a capacity of 96 people. Garuda suspended the flight apparently due to the low demand. But the company still operates the indirect flights via Jakarta and Medan.
Garuda Indonesia, along with Wings Air, Sriwijaya, and Citilink, also serves a number of domestic routes to and from Siborongborong.
What to Expect
The airport is small. There is no money changer. Exchange your money in Singapore, Jakarta or other cities before your departure. But there are some cash machines outside the terminal. They accept VISA, MasterCard, and Cirrus cards. Make sure you remember your personal identification numbers (PIN) otherwise you won’t be able to use them. Some hotels on Lake Toba exchange foreign currencies such as US Dollars, Australian Dollars, Euros, but the rates are not competitive.
There is no metered taxi, either. You can book a car transfer service upon arrival at the car rental desk outside the terminal. Service is on the first come first served basis subject to vehicle availability. The fare is around $20 for the city transfer. If you are not sure about the arrangement, you may book a car here.
